Mem Shannon up for Blues title

Mem Shannon and the Membership, one of the authentic New Orleans blues groups that played at last year's Burnaby Blues and Roots Festival, has been nominated for two of the most prestigious awards in the industry.

The band, which lost much of its equipment to Hurricane Katrina, has been nominated for Soul Blues Album of the Year (I'm from Phunkville) and Soul Blues Male Artist of the Year at the 2006 Blues Music Awards, formerly known as the W.C. Handy Awards.

Besides his incredible musicianship, Shannon was probably the most affable performer at last year's blues fest, spending more time at the fan appreciation tent signing autographs than any other performer.

Shannon deserves our support. Check out all the nominees and cast your vote for Shannon at the Memphis-based website of the Blues Foundation, at www.blues.org. Membership costs just $25 and it's well worth it.
