Burnaby-based rock band A Sheep at the Wheel will be releasing its first CD, a five-song effort titled Blend, at the Media Club this Friday night.

The band, which did its recording at Greenhouse Studios, features two members with strong Burnaby roots.

Guitar player Joel Grenz graduated from Burnaby South in 1996, where he was instrumental in starting up the television production course and the school's Rebel Alliance TV program. He recently graduated from UBC with a law degree.

Drummer Kurtis Findlay graduated from South in '99, where he played baritone saxophone in the concert and jazz bands and worked with the vocal jazz group.

A Sheep at the Wheel won the 1995 UBC Battle of Bands and their first single, Another Game, is currently receiving airplay on local hard rock station, CFOX.

The CD release party with be an early show, taking place at 7 p.m., June 17 at the Media Club, 695 Cambie St. The CD is available at Zulu Records, Red Cat Records and online through the band's own website www. asheepatthewheel.com.

HER SECOND TAKE

Shadbolt Centre singing coach Miriam Davidson recently released her second CD, aptly titled Second Take, to a small but appreciative audience at the popular Bistro Cafe on Main Street.

The disc, which combines elements of classical, rock, jazz and folk music features Davidson's airy and angelic voice and piano playing complemented by guitarist Elijah Bak, standup bass player Bernie Addington and drummer Loren Davidson.

The music is reminiscent of Sarah Harmer and Beth Orton, and the CD is available from The Magic Flute, Zulu Records or her own website, www.miriamdavid son.com.

HOOLIGANS PLAY LIVE

Local heavy metal act Hooligan, featuring Burnaby's own Jonny Black and Jay Squires, will be performing on the Granville Mall later this month.

The band, which is known for its loud music and pyrotechnical tricks, recently released a new CD called No Apologies to add to its two earlier extended play albums.

The band plays "straight-ahead raw music ... a street level sound," said Black, who graduated from Alpha secondary. Their albums typically carry a parental advisory for explicit lyrics.

The band sports long hair and lots of tattoos and they'll be performing alongside the AC/DC tribute band Thunderstruck on June 23 at the Buffalo Club, 1161 Granville St.
