The Country Roots Furniture outlet on Dawson Road was lucky to escape with comparatively little damage after a three-alarm fire hit the 60,000-square-foot warehouse and office building just after 10:30 p.m. Friday night.

The fire, the cause of which is still under investigation, was stopped by a fire wall, meaning damage was confined to about 7,000 sq. ft. of the facility, said Capt. Jacquie Cliffe, fire prevention officer with the Burnaby Fire Department.

On Tuesday morning, city building inspectors were still trying to determine whether the damaged portion of the building was safe to enter, meaning investigators will probably not be able to determine an exact cause of the fire until Thursday at the earliest, Cliffe said.

Attempts to contact the store operators before NOW press deadlines were unsuccessful.
