War on 45 released as CD

Where were you in 1982? If you were protesting the trickle-down economics of Ronald Raygun, then you'll be glad to know that local music mogul Joey (Shithead) Keithley has just rereleased two of the most dynamic recordings of that heady era.

DOA's War on 45 and the Young Canadians' No Escape are the most recent additions to the Sudden Death label's roster of compact discs, and they are as relevant today as ever.

War on 45 was originally released as a seven-song EP that featured a frenetic punk rock version of the classic Edwin Starr antiwar song.

Among the underground hits from the original was Joey's dubbed- out version of War in the East, which features such prophetic lyrics as "It is better to fight against inflation. War only brings destruction. Build a better nation."

The Young Canadians release includes their greatest hit of all time, Hawaii, which could become an unofficial theme song for a certain well-known B.C. politician. No Escape also features copious liner notes from Art Bergmann's longtime friend, Buck Cherry.

While the recording is worth celebrating on its own, it is also a tribute to the YC's bass player Jim Bescott, one of the most talented performers in Vancouver's original punk rock scene, who died in a tragic accident just six weeks ago.

Nuff said, eh.
