This is an edited and spliced version of two stories published July 17, 2004
Who are the people who bring you the news?
Yes, there are real people behind the bylines on the stories you read in every issue.
Meet the Burnaby Now's editorial team:
The longest-serving news writer on the Burnaby Now editorial team is assistant editor Dan Hilborn, who first started covering city council meetings on Canada Way when he was a 10-speed-riding college student in the 1980s.
"This is a terrific job, and I couldn't imagine doing anything else," says the guy who covers everything from local politics to the environment to reports on local non-profit groups and the good deeds they accomplish in the community.
Hilborn comes from a journalistic family. His grandmother wrote a society page column with the weekly newspaper in Drumheller, Alberta more than 30 years ago, and his grandfather published a newspaper in Calgary during the Great Depression.
Born in the Kootenays on Feb. 29 in an unnamed leap year, Hilborn is a weekend father to 11-year-old Jacob, enjoys being assistant coach of his son's lacrosse team, reading classic history and news magazines, is an accomplished hackey-sack player and loves sunning himself at his favourite beach.
