Sleeping bags set on fire

Firefighters were called to the 6100 block of Willingdon Avenue around the lunch hour Wednesday to extinguish a suspicious fire in the exterior stairwell of an apartment building.

Several sleeping bags had been set on fire, causing a limited amount of damage to the concrete stairwell, said chief fire prevention officer Fred Scarfe.

"The fire crew was able to put it out fairly quickly, and then they ventilated the stairwell," Scarfe said. An investigation is underway.
