The Cariboo Hill Chargers are heading to the B.C. high school AA volleyballl championships.
The club earned its place at the provincials thanks to wins over crosstown rival Moscrop Panthers and Richmond's Hugh Boyd secondary during the Lower Mainland playoffs last week.
"We went in as an unknown squad, and we won as an unknown squad," said assistant coach Ben Robinson. "To win now, we have to show up and focus on teamwork.
"When all our guys play well together, we never lose."
Robinson and head coach Chris Philips are both former Cariboo Hill players who graduated from the school in 2001. Throughout the year, the small Cariboo Hill team honed its skills against the tough AAA league teams in town - Burnaby North and Burnaby South finished in first and second place respectively at the recent Lower Mainland AAA championships.
Many of the Charger volleyball players also keep in shape by playing on the successful Focus volleyballl club, which went to the u-16 club national tournament last year.
Robinson believes his team can do well at the provincials.
"We're going out there to win," he said. "If we play our best we can compete. We have the talent."
Among the stars of the Chargers are captain Bashir Halin, a member of the Team B.C. u-16 squad, and setter Tuan Hoang, who went to last year's u-16 national championships with the Focus Club.
