The Cliff Avenue United u-18 gold boys' soccer team had good reasons to celebrate over the recent Thanksgiving long weekend.
Playing without the services of team captain Ben Hunt, who was forced to watch from the sidelines due to an injury, the local boys went undefeated at the Richmond Youth Thanksgiving Soccer Tournament.
The team outscored their opposition 7-2 in the preliminary rounds as they defeated Surrey, Ladner and West Vancouver, and then they saved their best for last.
Kyle Craig scored two times in the championship final against Eagle Ridge as Cliff Ave. took home the hardware with a 5-1 victory.
Matthew Linder was strong in goal all weekend. Exceptional play was also shown by Scott Boyko, daniel Carreira, Kyle Fraser, David Kliiewer, Robbie Smallwood, Steve Umanzor, Stanley Navarro and the Craig brothers, Kyle and Cody.
JR. CATS IN TOUGH
It's crunch time for the Burnaby Central Junior Wildcats who must defeat the Centennial Centaurs today in order to advance to the Lower Mainland high school football playoffs.
The junior Wildcats found their backs against the wall after a 30- 20 loss to the Terry Fox Ravens at the Burnaby Lake fields last Thursday.
Quarterback Curtis Moss was outstanding in the game, running in two touchdowns himself and throwing to Ryan Quinn for the team's third scoring play of the game.
The loss comes just one week after the squad proved it knows how to score with a 20-0 shellacking of Port Moody. Moss scored all three Central touchdowns while rushing for 150 yards.
Coach Ron Frederick said there was good play all around in the Port Moody game. Adam Chitticks pulled down three catches to rack up 43 yards, while Mauro Perizzolo, Suliasi Vaivaka and Shamil Madatali combined for 22 tackles.
The junior Cats sport a league record of 1-2 and are 3-3 overall.
BLAZE IS BURNING
Jerica Ditson recorded her first ever shutout as the Burnaby Girls u-15 Blaze walloped the Chilliwack Strikers 6-0 at the Riverway fields Sunday.
Ditson impressed her teammates and the opposition with her acrobatics in the cage as she stopped all comers.
Turning up the heat for the Blaze at the other end of the field were goal scorers Jenna Eppler, Alicia Woodside, Michelle Rodrigues and Lisa McCann, who potted her marker on a long shot over the head of the opposition netminder.
Kendall Miller and Courtney Lawrence were instrumental in setting up several of the goals.
The Blaze is on fire posting a second-place finish at the Port Coquitlam Thanksgiving Tournament and will turn up the heat next week with a match in Kerrisdale.
