A total of 20 outstanding Burnaby citizens have been awarded the Golden Jubilee Medal, struck to honour the 50th anniversary of the accession of Queen Elizabeth.
The list includes some very familiar names and lesser known people who have made a significant contribution to Canada, B.C., or Burnaby or an outstanding achievement abroad that brings credit to Canada, said a press release from Burnaby-Douglas MP Svend Robinson.
The award recipients are: Ruby Johnson, James Chamberlain, Michael Hurley, Liz Dill, Debbie Clyne, Sonja Sanguinetti, Pegah Pourkarimi, Elsie Dean, Doug Sigurdson, Ken Ryan, Leslie Keith Deane, Paulene Hall, Nelson Tsui, Marlena Morgan, Mayor Doug Drummond, John Lewe, Bong Won Kang, Sadhu Singh Dhesi, Linda Aug and Arnold Matibag.
"Many excellent nominations were received for this honour and this made the decision a very difficult one," Robinson said. "The 20 people on this list are a diverse and notable group who have made our community, our province and our country a better place.
The medals will be presented at the Burnaby Lake Pavilion, 6871 Roberts Ave., at 2 p.m., Oct. 27.
THE SECRET OF LONGEVITY
Something very special happened on Yale Street in north Burnaby this week - neighbours who live directly across the street from each other celebrated their 50th and 60th wedding anniversaries, respectively.
Doris and Lloyd Burford celebrated their diamond anniversary (60 years together) on Oct. 14, while Dixie and Gordon Reid celebrated their golden anniversary (half a century) on Sept. 27.
Neighbours had the two happy couples over for a quiet celebration of the occasion on Thursday night.
"I've lived next to these couples for 23 years, and I couldn't have wished for better neighbours," said Yale Streeter Neville Thomas.
When asked if there might be something special about Yale Street that helps make these marriages last, Neville, whose been hitched for just 26 years, chuckled.
"I have be to be careful what I say because my wife's listening," he told a reporter.
