Burnaby RCMP are warning the public to use an anti-theft device and never leave valuables in their vehicle after a stabbing near the Metrotown library around 8:30 p.m., Monday night.
The father and his 14-year-old son, both Burnaby residents, were just leaving the library when they spotted a white male, believed to be in his 20s, trying to steal the family van.
The pair gave chase, but just as they caught up to the suspect, the felon turned around and stabbed the young man in the abdomen with a screwdriver. The suspect then ran off.
The boy was taken to B.C. Children's Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening wounds.
The suspect was described as short and stout with short, curly blond hair. He wore a red shirt and jeans, and carried a dark grocery bag.
Police spokesperson Const. Andrea Hills said precautions must be taken when parking in a public place. "Anywhere there is a large amount of parking there are always going to be vehicles stolen," she said. "If you're in a larger parking lot, it's better to take precautions - use an antitheft device and don't leave things in the open."
