Mandy Macalister of Moscrop secondary tore up the track for the Moscrop Panthers at the regional high school cross-country championships held in Confederation Park Wednesday.
The young runner finished almost half a minute ahead of her nearest competitor to win the girls' 3.6 kilometre race in a time of 12:43. Aleksandra Krasovska of Burnaby Central finished second at 13:14, almost a full minute ahead of third-place finisher Sari Raber of Richmond.
Despite Krasovska's strong finish, Moscrop wound up in second place in the girls' team standings behind New Westminster.
Other top finishers for Moscrop were Karen Forsman in 10th, Laura McIvor in 11th, Nancy Zenger in 19th and Jodie Edgar in 21st.
Other strong performances from Burnaby included Jacqueline Gant of Central taking sixth, Burnaby North students Stephanie Pagliaro taking 13th, Jillian Dickson 17th and Ashley Mayr taking 20th, and Burnaby South's Marley Greiner in 22nd.
On the boys' side, Kerry Kazuta of Alpha secondary was edged out by Sam Pawluk of Richmond for the championship. Other top finishers from Burnaby included Dylan Gant of Central in third and Desi Collinson of Alpha in fourth.
Alpha won the boys' team championship on the hilly 6.8-km course based on the scores of its top five finishers. Those runners were Danny Jouck in 13th, Dustin Nykoluk at 17th, Earl Picardal 18th, and Cory Tomingas 19th.
Rounding out the top 20 for Burnaby were Filip Anastassov of Burnaby North who came in fifth and Mark Rabinski of Burnaby South who finished 14th.
John Moe, coach of the young Cariboo Hill team was pleased to see two of his Grade 8 boys - Darren Anderson 10th and Spencer Moe 15th - qualify for the provincial championships.
And with a strong top-half finish from another Grade 8 charger, Alpha Monsarray, plus Grade 9 Andrew Duncan, the Charger coach believes he is just one runner short of having his entire team qualify for the provincials next year.
"The future looks bright for my young runners," Moe said. "I have lots of reasons to be optimistic."
