The SFU men's soccer club is on a roll.
The No. 9-ranked NAIA team upped its record to 11-2 and pulled off its fifth straight victory when it defeated Humboldt State University 3-0 last Thursday.
"It was a scrappy game," said SFU coach Dave Elligott. "Humboldt marked us very closely today. I'm proud our players didn't break down when we were tested, and we were able to get the result."
Kevin Crouch scored his 12th of the year and sixth game winner of the season in the 20th minute, while Robbie Cairns and defender Jesse Dhami rounded out the scoring for the Clan. SFU peppered Humboldt keeper Jeff Wallace with 27 shots.
Andrew Corazza, who leads the team with 20 goals and is aiming to break the university's single season scoring record, was ejected from the match in the 83rd minute. He will miss the Clan's second- to-last game of the year, set for Tuesday night after Burnaby NOW deadlines.
SFU has outscored its opposition 43-14 this season and Cairns credits the team's ball movement for its success.
"I thought we were able to swing the all around - especially our back four - and get great ball movement that created some quick attacks," he said.
HOOPSTERS ON A ROLL
The SFU men's basketball squad is tearing up the courts in Canadian university preseason action. The Clan upped its preseason record to a perfect 5-0 with a convincing 84-67 win over McMaster University last week.
SFU got 27 points from North Van's Brent Charleton, who hit 11 of 14 shots, including three treys, and another 25 points plus five rebounds from Richmond native Pasha Bains.
"I felt like we had good ball movement at times, and we got production from everybody," said Clan coach Scott Clark, who saw all 11 players score and the team average 50 per cent shooting from the floor. "At times, we were really good, and if we develop some toughness, we will be even better."
His club led 37-30 at the half.
WINNIPEG GETS COLD
There wasn't much of a warm welcome when Simon Fraser University played its first ever women's volleyball game in the Canadian Interuniversity Sports Association.
The Clan, who previously belonged to the U.S.-based NAIA, were trounced 3-0 and 3-1 to defending CIS champion, University of Manitoba Bisons, earlier this month.
"This weekend gave us a good indication what we have to work on to get better," said Clan coach Lisa Sulatycki. "We played a lot better the second night, but I'm still not satisfied where we are as a team."
Middle blocker Melissa Holt led with six kills on eight attempts, while outside hitter Heather Androsoff of Burnaby had 17 kills in 39 attempts.
The Clan has only three senior players on its squad, said the coach. "We are very young, and the other teams will have that experience factor over us," she said. "We were really tight in the first match Saturday, we just couldn't get the ball rolling. I think during the first set reality struck (that Manitoba is defending champion) and we were really hesitant.
"We just got schooled."
In addition to the inexperience factor, the Clan will have to cope with a different playing season. The Canadian league has games spread out over two semesters instead of one.
