The young Burnaby Central senior girls' volleyball team will be bringing the city's hopes with them when the Lower Mainland high school championships get underway this week.
Sharon Snow, coach of the Wildcats girls, said her squad will be riding a wave of momentum into the playoffs after a recent win over No. 7-ranked Highland.
"I believe we can be in the top three going into the provincials," Snow said last week, after the Wildcats bested the North Vikings and South Rebels for the top spot in the BurWest division. "We have a good chance, but we just have to keep serving and passing, because we don't have any powerhouse hitters."
The Wildcats are led by their only senior-aged player, Lejla Alic, whose younger sister Amelia is considered the 'Cats top hitter.
But the Alic sisters are both under five-foot-five, and that means the club is not as tall as most teams on the high school circuit.
"We don't have a lot of height, so that means we just have to out- hustle the other teams. And we've managed to do that so far."
The top three teams in the BurWest region, Central, South and North, will be at the Lower Mainland playoffs this weekend on the North Shore.
On the senior boys' side, the Burnaby North Vikings earned top ranking in the BurWest division. They will also play at their own Lower Mainland tournament this week.
Burnaby Mountain will represent the junior girls, New West won the juvenile girls' district title, and Burnaby Mountain was the top bantam girls' team to advance out of the BurWest division.
